Media Overview

"Whoever controls the media the images
controls the culture."

  Allen Ginsberg

This section begins with an overview of Media Elements and Media Selection. The goal is to highlight the instructional decisions that determine media options. (Some of the following pages are still being created.)

Each of the major sections of the web site emphasizes the important role of Media in building performance solutions for organizational development. Click on Knowledge Management, E-Learning and Performance Support for these discussions.

This frame offers a "big picture" strategy for the use of media. It allows a designer to take seriously the quotation of Allen Ginsberg shown above ("Whoever controls the media — the images — controls the culture.") to build a learning organization culture that is coherent, positive and integrated.

The section, "The Process Paradigm," provides an overview of the Cognitive Design model. The model uses the elements of Information, Instruction, Media and Delivery System as the fundamental components for planning, evaluating and building performance solutions.

The mix of media is an aspect of curriculum design that drives effectiveness of initial learning and transfer of learning into new environments — to improve performance. Finding the optimum "Media Mix" is an important component of a Blended Learning instructional strategy.

This graphic illustrates a composition of media elements (CD-ROM, Online, Virtual Classroom, Print and Classroom) used in a blended learning approach to engage both self-study and group interaction.

The section "The Media Elements" provides an overview of media element options, and distinguishes the concept of Instructional Media from both Instructional Method and Delivery System.

The section "Principles of Multimedia " describes the impact of multiple media types on learning, and requirements for an effective media mix.

Discussion of Blended Learning is found in the sections:

The distinctive role of Instructional Media can be seen in each of these discussions.
